What Does Freedom Mean to You?

When the month of July approaches, our minds are immediately drawn to the topic of freedom, and I like to contemplate exactly what freedom means to various individuals.  At the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it had an entirely different meaning to the constituents of that era.  One of the most important statements coming from this legendary document was, “That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.”  Free and independent – no ties attached.  This renowned signature broke ties with Britain and formed an independent country.

This celebratory day brings my mind to the spiritual freedom that comes when giving our life to Jesus Christ and proclaiming a breaking of ties to the carnality of the world.  By choice, we align ourselves with Godly and righteous living, and we are no longer bound by the bonds of Satan.  This new life of holy living is not a binding force of demand but one of freedom of choice derived from love.  As an adult, you are free to make your own decisions and choices; however, being a child of the King causes us to desire the right things.  Psalms 37:4 states, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”  This is an often-misunderstood scripture taken mistakenly to mean we will receive everything we want.  Not so. It does mean; however, that God will change our desires to proper desires.  He will place the desires within us. It has significant meaning when properly understood.  I want to desire the things that God wants me to desire!

Freedom in Christ doesn’t mean that you can do anything you desire without consequences.  There is always a price to pay for our actions.  What it does mean is that you now have the ability to make the right decisions!  That is so reassuring to me and places a protection over me.

John 8:36 encourages us with these words, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”  Thank God for freedom!
